Presidential candidate John Miguel is finding himself under attack tonight, the night before UNC Charlotte's student body elections begin. A confidential source familiar with Miguel's work with Student Court in Fall 2005 is leveling accusations that Miguel fraudulently posed as another member of Student Court to send a vicious email to an undisclosed third party. The candidate is also accused of illegally misrepresenting the ideals of another court member after logging into their personal email account to send that message.
According to the source, who is familiar with the case and had close ties with Student Court during the Fall 2005 incident, the email was brought to the attention of the Dean of Students Office, who then brought in Police and Public Safety.
When asked if the accusations were true, Miguel said, "Absolutely not, that is absolutely ridiculous. The claims are not true, this is a negative attack from some people who are afraid that I might win [the presidential election]."
According to the source, Police and Public Safety asked some members of Student Court to take a polygraph test, though the source was not sure if Miguel was one of them. Miguel had no comment on ever being asked to take a polygraph test, and also wished not to comment on any supplemental information in regards to this case.
The source stated that then Assistant Dean of Students Turi Plisch offered Student Court members a chance to resign instead of facing any responsibility for the action. The source believes it is for this reason Miguel left Student Court in the Fall of 2005.
Miguel confirmed that he did resign from Student Court around this time, but for personal reasons that he doesn't "want to go into."
When asked about the incident, Plisch stated there was an investigation in Fall 2005, but would not discuss what it entailed or who was involved. Christine Davis, currently assistant dean of students, also said that an investigation took place but would not discuss it in detail. The source stated that anyone close to incident has been told by the DOS Office not to discuss the case.
**Editors Note** Due to FERPA laws Student Court records are sealed to protect the parties involved. The Dean of Students office is bound to those laws which protect its students and could not disclose any specifics about this case.
