1. Chancellor Dubois welcomed to campus
This year marked a milestone as former Chancellor James Woodard left this University after 16 years in that position. Philip Dubois entered as UNC Charlotte's fourth chancellor, who was officially installed Feb. 3.
Chancellor Dubois came from University of Wyoming where he served as president. Dubois returned to UNCC after leaving in 1997. Dubois was provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs before he left for Wyoming.
2. Hurricane Katrina transforms nation
When Katrina hit the gulf coast the immense impact it had on our country was felt and seen in every aspect of our lives. From gas to politics to racism, every facet about this tragedy brought together not only this country but also our University.
UNCC community raised more than $10,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Some students also went down to the area during spring break to help with cleaning up the disaster.
3. New class schedule to begin fall 2006
This year the immense amount of growth caused a minor glitch in the travel time to and from buildings, extra five minutes to be exact. Due to this difference in time to get to different academic buildings the UNCC administration decided to change the class schedule for fall 2006.
The new schedule focuses on two-day schedule with Monday/Wednesday, Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday. This brought lash back from students who worry about the schedule taking away student life on the weekend as well as putting kinks in student's daily lives.
4. Fugitive found on campus last fall
Our quiet campus became home to a fugitive last fall. The fugitive, Robert Windsor, was hiding on campus since the Friday before his capture Monday. The capture occurred when the library security guard Niraj Bista followed the lead of another library staff member.
Windsor was wanted for the kidnapping and murder of his former girlfriend.
5. Flash fire closes University, injures four
This year this University has experienced a lot of unexpected emergencies and one of the biggest this year (on a local level) is the flash fire and explosion which occurred April 13.
The incident not only caused the University to shut down for two days due to the power outage, but also sent five facilities management employees to the hospital.
One employee, Ed Seamon, is still critically injured. There currently is a "UNC Charlotte Seamon Assistance Fund" which contributions can be sent to the UNCC Cashier's office at 9201 University City Blvd.; Charlotte, N.C. 28223. All cash and credit card donations should be taken to straight to the office.
6. UNC system yields new president
This year UNC-system president Molly Broad left and Erskine Bowles stepped into the role.
Bowles is most well known for running for Congress and working under former president Bill Clinton.
7. University area crime begin to increase
After a successful fall semester in battling crime and crime prevention, this University saw a downfall during the spring, especially surrounding spring break.
The mainly off campus armed robbery became to normal for students attending UNCC. To help deal with the increase of robberies, the University Police increased patrols on and around campus.
8. SGA changes suit
This year was the year of change for the Student Government Association.
SGA changed several internal structuring to ensure a better quality Senate for students. SGA with the help of others also continued tailgating at all men's home Saturday basketball games to increase school spirit.
9. Niner Nation
After shedding the infectious name, Gang Greene, the student body underwent a revamped name change and added a fresh new feeling with Niner Nation.
Designed to create a more unified, school spirited UNCC student body, the new campaign kick started this year with flying colors.
Now offering $7 Niner Nation T-shirts in the University Bookstore, this campus is showing the world it bleeds green.
10. A-10 country
The Charlotte 49ers made a trek to the new Atlantic 10 Conference, saying goodbye to the CUSA conference. The University adapted to playing new teams and saying goodbye to longtime rivals. With the goodbye to rivals meant hello to a new point system set up this year.
The new point system reallocated the way students earned better seats for basketball games. The new points system resulted in record number attendance records to volleyball matches.
Luckily for the Niners, each team excelled in their sport and the new conference, making the A-10 feel like home sweet home.
