Looking to continue earning a reputation as one of the most active groups on campus, the UNC Charlotte College, who were student organization of the year less than two years ago, plan to be more active and noticeable this year, so the whole campus will know and remember the name.
"We are focused on growing the membership of the organization. This year, we are going to have more social events to keep our members involved," said Cameron French, President of the College Democrats.
Going back to last year, the College Democrats did have a very busy year, with their greatest achievement being bringing Cate Edwards to campus. At the time, Edwards was coming to campus to support her father John Edwards, then Vice Presidential candidate and Senator from North Carolina. She had the opportunity to speak with the students and Charlotte community leading up to the election.
"Since the election did not go in our favor, unfortunately we were not as active as we should have been. We did, however, have the opportunity to join in protest with many other student organizations against the Anti-Affirmative Action Bake Sale," French said.
This year, things plan to be very different in terms of schedule. The College Democrats have already planned a full calendar of events for this school year. One of the major focuses of this club during the fall semester will be the race for mayor of Charlotte coming up in November. Candidate Craig Maddens, who recently paid a visit to campus, will be running against incumbent Pat McCrory, who is currently serving his fifth consecutive term in office.
"The school has changed its power at the top, with a new chancellor. Maybe its time for a change in power at the top for the city as well," John Thomas, accounting major, said.
Along with focusing on the mayoral election, the College Democrats would like to see more things from the University get done.
"Like a number of other student organizations, anything that has the student body involved is a great thing. Democrats and Republicans alike ... on this campus, we are all a part of Niner Nation," said French.
Each year, there is always one event in particular that both the media and students are eagerly anticipating and waiting for to happen. Although there was an intellectual debate run at the affirmative action bake sale last year, the big question that the media and students are still waiting to be answered is why there has still not been an actual organized and structured debate between the Republicans & Democrats?
"As always, the offer for a debate with the College Republicans is always on the table. Why one has not taken place as of yet? It is best that you ask them," French said.
