Two miles north of uptown, a few blocks over from North Tryon Street, you’ll find a mixed and growing community based on a sprawling scene of artistic venues and small mom-and-pop shops. This community is situated on North Davidson Street as it is known to outsiders, but it’s just NoDa to the locals. Every two weeks this quant community hosts a local “Gallery Crawl,” giving an opportunity for local Charlotte artists and aspiring musicians to show off their talents. I had the chance to check out the latest crawl and enjoy some of Charlotte’s local creations.
Friday, September 18 hosted the local “Gallery Crawl,” and artist Susan Nuttall was on hand to show off her work at The Green Rice Gallery and Studios. Nuttall, a native of Charlotte, has been in the art industry for the past fourteen years and she has displayed many of her pieces in the local NoDa art galleries. Friday’s show highlighted her newest collection of textured work. In her newest series, “Textures of Nature,” Nuttall attempts to harness her excitement for the properties of color, light, and shadow as they reflect her images.
The technique of texturing is Nuttall’s most frequently used style with oils, giving her a unique approach to her art. For this specific collection, Nuttall was given a chance to also show off her new texture product that provides an almost 3-D effect to her artwork. By paying great attention to detail in each composition, Nuttall values the different elements of nature, along with the variety of colors nature provides. Beginning by using thumbnail sketches to mark out her original and very rough idea, Nuttall attempts to grasp the compositional elements she wishes to convey before she begins her work.
In speaking with Nuttall at The Green Rice Gallery and Studios, she expressed that she is very pleased with the NoDa artistic atmosphere, specifically The Green Rice Gallery and Studios. Nuttall stressed that she isn’t a very big fan of the uptight atmosphere most galleries have.
She added that The Green Rice Gallery and Studios is a place “where you just want to come in and have a good time.” The Green Rice Gallery and Studios is open Wednesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 6p.m., Saturdays from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
If you missed Susan Nuttall and the “Gallery Crawl” this week, not to worry, Nuttall’s “Textures of Nature” collection runs through September 27 at The Green Rice Gallery and Studios and the local NoDa “Gallery Crawl” is hosted every two weeks.
