“Twilight” is an action-packed modern love story between two characters, uniquely different, yet who’ve come to love one another. In a way it is almost indescribable, yet it has been described by Stephanie Meyers. “Twilight” is based on the first novel of a four-part trilogy about a girl who falls in love with vampire.
Bella Swan, played by Kristin Stewart, is the modern-day new girl in town. She moves in with her father, after her mother remarries, and finds herself in a new state, new city and new school. Yet that wasn’t all she found. And in walks Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson. He’s different from other boys, and Bella feels a pull towards him. Yet she still can’t figure out why he’s so different, until later. Edward is a vampire, but he and his family aren’t like other vampires; they don’t drink human blood. To Edward, Bella is the person he has waited 90 years for - his soul mate. But the closer they get, the more Edward must struggle to resist the primal pull of her scent, which could send him into an uncontrollable blood frenzy. Somehow or other, they will have to manage their unmanageable love. But when a new group of vampires come to town and threaten the Cullens’ way of living, it not only affects Edward, but Bella too. The movie is filled with delightful scenes between the two lovebirds, in which definitely had every girl in the audience is wishing she had her own Edward Cullen to go home to.
“Twilight,” like many movies that have come out recently, is based on a novel. I read the book, it was good, and as expected, the movie did its job of conveying the main themes. But when novels are made into movies, they lose a lot of the voice of character, and no, I’m not talking about the lines. I’m talking about the internal voice, their thoughts, ideas, passions; there is only so much that can be expressed through facial expressions and lines. Now in no way am I saying that this was a bad movie. I enjoyed it very much, I just had higher expectations for it, but again this is my opinion.
The acting was pretty good, I would never have thought of casting Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen, but it worked out in the end. He portrayed being a vampire that has lived for over 90 years very well. And as far as the character of Bella Swan, it was good choice in casting Kristin Stewart; she definitely does her part in conveying her love for Edward, and how deep of a person Bella is; she’s not the kind of girl who wants all the attention in the world, she’s content with just being herself. My main problem with the casting fell with the other vampires of Cullen family. For instance, Alice; she was one of my favorite characters in the book, yet in the movie she seems more serious and not as personal. Reading it, you could feel her giddiness during every situation and that was not present in the movie. But the one character that I feel they severely made a mistake in casting was Dr. Carlisle Cullen, adoptive father to Edward. He was suppose to be this young doctor that literally had women drooling over themselves, but in the movie he was just some guy, he wasn’t that special. I understand that it’s hard to make real people seem unearthly, but seriously, slapping pale make-up on someone and telling them to always look sulky, does not make one look like a vampire.
