The cooks got the water boiling this past Wednesday when CAB hosted its Top Ramen Chef Competition. Three ramen chefs came and competed for that moment of self-aggrandizing glory and find out whose ramen cuisine reigns supreme. Alton Brown could not make his flight but the competition flamed on.
When dealing with ramen, you do not start with authenticity, you begin with a bland pallete. These artful chefs took the pallette and added their own colors and with each chef came a very diverse recipe.
Three competitors with their eyes on the prize stepped up to the stage at AfterHours and presented the judges with what their minds brought to fruition.
There were no specific judges in this competition, instead majority vote ruled. Majority vote chose Marquina Lucas’ ramen as the best of the three. Her combination of Southern style flavors with a traditional Oriental base was enough to grab her first place. Lucas was kind enough to share her recipe with the University Times: Three packs of chicken favored ramen, two cups of cheese, a dash of salt and pepper and one cup of crushed “real” bacon.
Tierra Norwood came in second place with her simple additions to this age old delicacy. Her short and simple dish won the favor of many but not enough to surpass Lucas. She also was kind enough to share her recipe as well. Simply cooked ramen noodles, sugar and vinegar. Many were surprised to hear the ingredients of Norwood’s surprising, delicious dish.
Last, but not least was Angel Farmer’s cuisine. It was, perhaps, the most healthy and “vegetarian” dish of the contest. Farmer’s dish was definitely delicious, it just did not appeal to the crowd as well as Lucas and Norwood’s dishes. Seemingly professionally prepared, Farmer’s recipe includes: Four bags of ramen, two bags of green tea, half of a tomato, half of an onion, two cloves of garlic, a little green pepper, four drops of soy sauce and a dash of salt and pepper for flavor.
AfterHours became Kitchen Stadium on an interesting afternoon. With nerves of steel and iron hearts, these three chefs stepped into the fire of the kitchen in search of culinary glory.
