Cycle Pump is intense; the class incorporates at separate times the bike and the use of weights. The class is located in the Group Fitness Aerobics room in the SAC on Fridays, from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

A group of eight attendees, plus Instructor Thomas Emmett, started with cycling.

As for the bike’s pedal straps that cradle the foot, do put them on: you will need them when you lift off the seat in a stand-up position.

At first, I looked at them and thought of all the times I found them annoying when I was on the bike in the fitness center, but I decided they must have a purpose for this class.  Sure enough they did, and they were not so annoying; I was grateful that they kept me from falling off, reducing the likelihood of humiliation.

Then after a half an hour of going back and forth with resistance and speed on the bikes, we got off the ’cycles and moved on to the weights portion of the class.  The weights worked our arms and our back muscles with repetitions of the weight in different positions.

After the weights we had five minutes to spare, so we grabbed ourselves mats and proceeded to end the class with crunches working our abs.  We received a full body workout in the entire hour.

As a personal recommendation, don’t wear shorts, because the bike seat could rub you the wrong way.  Pants or calf-length workout pants work great.

Another tip: definitely bring water to avoid dehydration.

There are 15 bikes total for the room’s equipment, so if you plan on coming to any cycling class, get there promptly.

Also, this class is great for anyone, no matter what your physical fitness status might be, because you can take the class at your own pace.  Don’t feel pressured by anyone else in the class to push yourself too hard.  You should always be your own motivator, because at the end of a class you answer to yourself – so enjoy the workout.
