Family Weekend 2008, Oct. 3 – 5, offered families three days of nonstop Niner fun. This year, Niner Nation Family presented “The first Gold and Green Experience.” This year featured the first time parents were invited for a full weekend of activities with attendance of over 280 people.

“We usually just have a family day,” Coordinator of Parent Programs Kesha Williams said.

A Gold Day, Friday, began with registration in the evening and included free attendance at the Women’s Volleyball game versus Xavier as well as a Wine and Cheese Reception before being formally welcomed by Chancellor Dubois. The first day ended with a Family Feud competition in the McKnight Auditorium.

A Green Day, Saturday, families were invited to take part in the 2008 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Uptown Charlotte. Families could also choose to attend the Venture Rope Course, a team building exercise.

Following the morning activities, parents were invited to the “Back to School for Parents” lecture where professors, faculty and staff talked about life on campus. These lectures included stress managment, dealing witih credit card debt and other topics of interest. Lunch followed where parents could continue to speak with processors and meet members of the administrative staff.

Family Fun Zone opened after lunch where families could play around in inflatable obstacle courses and try to win at popular carnival games. The games filled the West Quad until late in the afternoon when families attended a pre-game celebration at Transamerica Field. Women’s soccer faced off against Saint Louis that evening.

For the families not interested in athletics, the Harold Danko Quintet, featuring Rich Perry and Clay Jenkins held a jazz concert in Robinson Hall. Before the show guests attended “A 49er Elegant Affair” in the Robinson Hall West Lobby.

The final day, “The Gold and Green Day,” began at 2 p.m. with the free TIAA-CREF All-Star Jazz Festival Concert in Robinson Hall. Or, families could see one more sporting event, Volleyball vs. Dayton.

“We were really happy with everything,” Williams said, “I predict it only getting bigger.”

The next major event families need to mark is Family Day coming in the spring semester, in compliance with Homecoming. For more information about Family Day visit UNCC Parents.
