With another weekend of great competition in the books, three 49ers found their names being called out in recognition of their outstanding performances in the Atlantic-10.
Leading the way was junior harrier Adu Dentamo, who earned his first ever A-10 Performer of the Week honors. The Vance High School graduate ran the fastest time of his college career this past weekend at the Paul Short Invitational in Lehigh, PA. Dentamo’s time of 24:03 was good enough for ninth in the prestigious race, which featured many All-American runners, several nationally ranked teams and nearly 300 runners. That time was also the fastest by any runner from the Atlantic-10 at the meet by over 10 seconds.
As a freshman, Dentamo also earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors several times, and has been named All-Conference twice in cross-country.
Freshman Oni Bernard continued the recent streak of freshman award-winning dominance for Charlotte this week, as she seized her second A-10 Rookie of the Week honor.
Bernard continued her outstanding offensive output against conference foe St. Louis on Saturday as the forward scored her fifth goal of the season and assisted on another in Charlotte’s 3-0 victory.
The Toronto native is third on the team in scoring with 15 points and is the top scoring freshman in the Atlantic-10.
Charlotte women’s soccer has now generated the last three straight A-10 Rookie of the Week honors, as freshman Jonna Handa earned the award last week and Bernard the week before.
For freshman Isaac Caughran, it was a weekend of firsts. The midfielder scored his first goal of his collegiate career on his very first shot in, as the Charlotte men’s soccer team rolled over Central Florida 4-0. Yesterday, the new Niner was rewarded by being named A-10 Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career.
Caughran’s goal was the first goal of the game against the Knights, giving Charlotte a lead it would never lose.
Caughran is also the first freshman Niner to win A-10 Rookie of the Week honors this year and is one of five Charlotte freshmen to have scored a goal this year for the Niners.
As a freshman, Caughran has started eight of Charlotte’s nine games and has helped the Niner defense allow only one goal in the team’s last five games.
