Dear Freshmen,

Health and Safety inspection time is not one of panic.  This is the time where big fancy officials come around to make sure that we’re not making our rooms a hazard to ourselves.  They want to make sure you aren’t plugging your computer, your TV, and your PS2 into a single multi-plug extension cord.

They want to make sure that your cable isn’t cutting across the floor in front of the TV where your guests will trip.  At the same time, you won’t get in trouble if your desk is messy – as long as you don’t have dirty dishes growing interesting brands of science projects.

You won’t get in trouble if there are soap bubbles on your shower wall; they want to make sure there isn’t anything growing that the wonderful housekeepers will have to clean up at the end of the semester.

However if you do fail, take solace in the famous words of Douglas Adams – “DON’T PANIC!” As long as you don’t have illegal appliances, you shouldn’t get a fine.  They’re not coming to your room to scare you, they aren’t trying to get you in trouble.

They’re going to say ‘Please fix this, and we’ll come back to make sure you’ve done it.’  So don’t worry: if you’re still unsure over a specific situation, ask your RA or RC; that’s what they’re there for!  They love to help and answer questions; after all, it is their job.

Here are some examples of what to do to get ready.

Keep your trash and recycling bin from overflowing: take out the trash when it’s full, not when it’s smelly.

Spray your shower with cleaner when you’re done – this will keep icky things from growing. Don’t forget the inside of the shower curtain!

While a messy desk isn’t a problem, a messy floor is.  Having things all over the place constitutes a fire hazard, as people could trip over it on their way to the doors or windows.

If you just do not have room for your backpack in your closet or under the bed, tuck it against the wall out of the way.

Try to wash your dishes once you’re done eating. It’ll not only keep you in good stead with the inspection officials, but your roommates will be happy too.

Vacuuming your living space is troublesome, but even if you’ve only got a wimpy little dust devil try to suck up the crummy messes once you notice them.  The RCs should be able to let you know how to obtain a vacuum to rent if you don’t have one of your own.

If you’re living in an apartment, make sure your fridge is clean. Throw out food when it goes bad, and if something spills, clean it up.  Also, storing food in your oven is a no-no, as you could start a fire.

Storing bread in your microwave shouldn’t be a problem, but keeping your oven, microwave, and fridge clean are musts.  These aren’t actually your things, and when you leave, housekeeping has to maintain them. Be considerate!
